Canadian Bus Decapitator

For those of you that haven’t heard some dude went ape shit crazy on a Canadian bus, stabbed the guy next to him; and proceeds to cut his head off.

CNN has the following story: As horrified travelers watched, a Greyhound Canada bus passenger repeatedly stabbed and then decapitated a young man who was sitting and sleeping beside him, a witness said Thursday.
Police investigate the scene near Portage la Prairie, Canada, on Thursday.

“There was a bloodcurdling scream. I was just reading my book, and all of a sudden, I heard it,” Garnet Caton, who was sitting in front of the two men, said of the Wednesday night incident west of Portage la Prairie in Manitoba.

“It was like something between a dog howling and a baby crying, I guess you could say,” Caton said. “I don’t think it will leave me for a while.”

Passengers exited the bus, and a trucker who stopped provided wrenches and crowbars to several of them so they could keep the suspect on the bus until police came, witnesses told Canadian TV.

The suspect was seized with the help of negotiators, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Steve Colwell said. Video Watch Colwell discuss the case »

There was no immediate indication of what prompted the attack, Colwell said. He said he didn’t know how many times the victim was stabbed. Witnesses described the weapon as a large butcher-type knife.

Caton told The Associated Press that the victim appeared to be about 19 years old and had gotten on the bus in Edmonton.

Caton said the victim was sleeping with his head leaning against the window when the attack happened. Caton said he shouted at the other passengers, many of whom also were sleeping, to leave.

“Everybody got off the bus. Me and a trucker that stopped and the Greyhound driver ran up to the door to maybe see if the guy was still alive or we could help or something like that,” Caton said.

“And when we all got up, we saw that the guy was cutting off the guy’s head. ... When he saw us, he came back to the front of the bus, told the driver to shut the door. He pressed the button and the door shut, but it didn’t shut in time, and the guy was able to get his knife out and take a swipe at us,” Caton said.

Not everyone that takes the bus is crazy, but crazy people always seem to take the bus.

The Pig And Whistle

July 22nd, 2008

I went out with Campea and my long time friend from Welland Jeff Lava this evening. We had supper at a pub on Hollywood Blvd called The Pig And Whistle. They made a hamburger that was absolutely outstanding and should be tried by all that eat meat.

The hamburger is my go to at a restaurant; you can tell a lot about the establishment by the care in which they make one.

If the meat is succulent and covered with perfectly caramelized onions – you are off to a good start.

San Diego Comic Con

July 21st, 2008

I m getting excited about the upcoming San Diego Comic Convention. I must cover the festivities for The Movie Blog, and will be getting into some pretty outstanding events as a result.

I am most excited to check out the actual floor of the convention where the merchants sell their comic books and other wares. I remember seeing pictures of the convention in comic books that I bought as a child and it will be cool to see the event first hand. I am hoping to find Walt Simonson in a corner so I may pester him for a drawing of Thor.

Central Music

July 13th, 2008

In my hometown of Welland Ontario, there is an outstanding music shop named Central Music. I was strumming my acoustic uke today and I remembered the day I bought it at Central.

I was taking bass lessons for about 2 years and saw a baritone uke on the wall. It was always there, hanging, and I kept banging around the idea of buying it. On my 15th birthday my grandmother slipped me some extra money along with the money my grandfather new about in the card. The cash equaled about a hundred bucks, which was just enough to get the uke. I remember being extremely happy with the purchase and was excited to learn another instrument. I took some soprano uke lessons when I was 10 in Mr. Sekel’s music class and knew that I needed to get a uke of my own. 5 years later, the Baritone ukulele would became my partner.

16 years on, I am still strumming away on the ukulele and tonight it took me back in time to the day I bought it. Central is a fantastic store and has provided a legion of Wellanders with the necessary tools to rock away the doldrums.

Playing music has always been a very rewarding hobby for me, and Central certainly helped get me started.

I Want An I Phone - Fuck You Rogers

July 11th, 2008

I switched to Rogers cellular after being terribly unhappy with the monstrous immoral telecom beast known as Bell Canada. As a former employee I was appalled at the way they treated their customers. One day they actually encouraged that we instill fear, doubt and uncertainty in our customers if they had internet with another provider (in order to sell more sympatico service).

It now looks like after my Rogers contract is done, I will be ditching them as well. Their Iphone plans are brutal, and the lack of an unlimited data plan is flat out unacceptable for a device such as this. The third world enjoys better cellular rates than Canada and this blatant gouging warrants the huge “fuck you” that is circling round the blog sphere.

Rogers could have scored tons of business from their competitors by simply offering a similar rate to AT&T in the States. Instead they have lost face, embarrased themselves and garnered immense negative press from the tech community round the globe.

P.S. If you offer unlimited plans pronto – people will forgive you.
