The Wrath Of Gustav: The New Atlantis
It appears that hurricane Gustav is on a crash course for New Orleans. With luck, the repair work that was done post Katrina on the levees will do their job and keep the water out. If however, the hurricane is as bad as they predicting; we may see another devastating force on a city that is still reelnig from the effects of KAtrina.
After Katrina, I thought it may be wise to reconsider rebuilding in an area that’ s geographically unfit to logically build a city in the first place. With a warming planet, the storms are said to be getting stronger. This area will always be vulnerable due to the fact that it continues to sink on the sandy soil on which it was built.
40% of the population left the land after Katrina, and I would strongly urge the other 60% to follow suit after Gustav. I cannot see things improving for this area in the future. I understand how hard it would be for people to leave their home, but when Mother nature wants humans off of her land, it’s always best to listen.
New Orleans is a place I have always wanted to visit, and sadly I think the moment has passed me by. The wisest move for all of her inhabitants is to hold onto their memories, share her story, and let her sink into the sea. New Orleans is a modern day Atlantis.
